MORRISON, COLORADO

The historic Town of Morrison, is a Home Rule Municipality in Jefferson County, Colorado.  The population was 430 at the 2000 census.  Known as the “Nearest Faraway Place,” residents of Morrison enjoy seasonal tourism, several world class shops and restaurants, and a history that is unique to Colorado.  If you are looking for an outdoor mecca that offers every kind of adventure imaginable but need to be close to major metro areas, Morrison would be the perfect place to call home.

This town, at the bottom of winding Bear Creek Canyon, is perhaps most famous for the nearby natural outdoor concert venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre. If you’ve already planned to see a show — and even if you haven’t — stop in picturesque Morrison. Its tiny main street strip is filled with restaurants, quaint shops and antique haunts.
In 1877, the holotypic remains of the dinosaurs Stegosaurus armatus and Apatosaurus ajax were discovered in and near Morrison by Arthur Lakes.  The majority of these fossils were shipped to O.C. Marsh at Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, Connecticut.  These finds from the Morrison area figured in the 19th century “Bone Wars” between rival paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh.
Eventually, the late Jurassic section of sedimentary rock excavated by Lakes was dubbed the Morrison Formation in honor of the town.
