SHAWNEE, COLORADO

Shawnee is an unincorporated community and a U.S. Post Office located in northern Park County, Colorado.   Shawnee is situated in the Platte Canyon, along the North Fork South Platte River, west of Bailey on U.S. Highway 285.

Shawnee is a tiny town that sits atop a hillside overlooking Highway 285. There’s a general store/tea room, art studio and post office. The rest of the community is residential.

Founded around 1860 and 5 miles west of Bailey on US 285, Shawnee has an art gallery, tea room, community center and U.S. Post Office. Due to the high concentration of historic buildings in town, Shawnee is now a historic district. Fitzsimmons Middle School and Platte Canyon High School are located 1 mile east of town.

Before the town was settled it was used as Ute hunting grounds, and was in route to the Gold Rush in South Park in 1859-1860. It was a summer resort town thanks to the river that ran by town. In 1937 the railroad closed.
