Things To Do In Denver

Denver offers more than 5,000 acres of parks, trails, golf courses and playgrounds.   In fact, many of Denver’s most prominent neighborhoods are built around and named after such beloved green spaces like Washington Park, City Park, Cheesman Park and Sloan’s Lake.   The metro area’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains also creates numerous opportunities for residents to ski and snowboard in the winter.

Home to the three-time Super Bowl-winning Denver Broncos, Denver is as sports-crazy as you think. Three downtown stadiums for football (Broncos), baseball (Colorado Rockies), basketball (Denver Nuggets) and hockey (Colorado Avalanche) means you can catch a game and then head out on the town with ease.

Denver, Colorado is also home to a flourishing arts scene, and music is a big part of life here. Numerous famous acts originated here at high altitude, including The Fray and Big Head Todd and the Monsters.

There are also nearly 100 breweries in metro Denver, and the sudsy area is host to the annual Great American Beer Festival that showcases more than 3,500 beers from brewers around the country.

When you attend an event at Denver Botanic Gardens, you not only enjoy a unique experience, but also support one of Denver’s important cultural landmarks.

Denver Weather

The biggest surprise for visitors to Denver is the climate. The arid conditions bring only 8 to 15 inches of annual precipitation and locals wake up to more than 300 days of sunshine a year. That’s more annual hours of sun than Miami and San Diego.

Winters are mild with an average daily high temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit and days reaching 60 degrees are not uncommon. Snow doesn’t stay on the ground long in Denver so golf courses and outdoor cafes are able to stay open all year.

In summer, Denver enjoys low relative humidity, making for beautiful, sun-filled days and cool, comfortable evenings. The average daily high temperature in August is a mild 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The mild weather is due in part to the city’s altitude: 5,280 feet above sea level, or exactly a mile high

Although the weather in Denver is generally sunny and dry, it can be subject to quick bursts of rain, snow, hail and lightning thanks to its geographical relation to the foothills of the mountains.   The local rule of thumb is that if you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes for it to change again.   Those unfamiliar with the Mile High City may think that winters are bad, but Denver usually experiences bright blue skies and powdery snow that melts by noon.

Although Denver’s nickname is the “Mile-High City” because its official elevation is one mile above sea level, defined by the elevation of the spot of a benchmark on the steps of the State Capitol building, the elevation of the entire city ranges from 5,130 to 5,690 feet.
